Most publications departments are receiving all of their content as Word files. Those word files (or the content from them) must then be moved over to an expensive desktop publishing system for final publication. In many cases, the desktop publishing system makes importing the text and formatting it difficult or tedious. Microsoft Word has come a long way in the last 10 years in terms of what it is capable of when it comes to laying out a publication. Further, Word can make things like automatic paragraph numbering, tables of contents, tables of authority, indices, and cross-references automatic (so they’re always right, even after editing). In this session, you’ll hear how one publications department is using Word, and we’ll show you some examples of actual publications with very complex formatting completely handled by Word’s native functionality.

BARRON K. HENLEY, ESQ. is one of the founding partners of Affinity Consulting Group, a legal technology consulting firm focused on automating and streamlining law firms and legal departments. He earned his B.S./B.A. and J.D. from The Ohio State University and is a member of the American, Ohio and Columbus Bar Associations, and the Worthington Estate Planning Council. He is a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management, a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, a member of Ohio Supreme Court Commission on Technology and the Courts, and a member of both the ABA Law Practice Management and the Real Property Trust and Estate Law Sections. Mr. Henley heads Affinity’s document assembly/automation and software training departments. Finally, Barron teaches continuing legal education (CLE) classes throughout the U.S. and Canada covering a wide variety of topics related to law practice management, technology and ethics.
Amy is Co-Executive Director and Director of Publications at the Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education. She has been an ACLEA member, SIG Chair and frequent speaker for 10 years. Before coming to the Institute, Amy was a litigator and Family Law mediator and former Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois. She lives in Springfield with her husband, 2 teenagers, and their challenging new Goldendoodle, Marvin.
